1893, Paris. Henry James, écrivain américain, est sur le point de se jeter dans la Seine quand Sherlock Holmes l'en empêche. Ce dernier, supposément mort deux ans plus tôt, a pris l'identité de Jan Sigerson, un explorateur norvégien, et enquête sur le suicide de Marian Hooper Adams. Les deux hommes partent éclaircir l'affaire à Washington. Le détective est cependant tourmenté par son identité.
